Sabrina Talbert
Like so many people, I have had somewhat of a turbulent relationship with foundation. Since I'm not a fan of matte makeup looks for myself, every aspect of my beauty routine is dedicated to bringing out my inner glow. Trying to find the perfect, natural-looking base that works to smooth and blur without totally repainting my complexion has proven tricky over the years. In fact, I've tried just about every foundation that's ever come my way in a bid to find the ideal second-skin formula.
I've come across countless foundations that have promised a solution but instead result in clogged pores and dry patches within a few hours of wear. If I'm being honest, most of the foundations I have tried have been, quite frankly, so-so. But occasionally, I come across a foundation that delivers such a glowy, dewy, and healthy-looking finish that I reach for it day in and day out.
Ask any makeup artist, and they'll vouch for these formulas too. "Glowy foundations bring life back into the skin," says celebrity makeup artist Lauren D'Amelio Ventre. "They create that lit from within effect that feels fresh, healthy, and elevated without looking heavy." To keep the hunt simple for you, keep scrolling for the official Who What Wear guide to the most glowing, dewiest foundations with the help of my fellow beauty editors.

Can you wear glowy foundation if you have oily skin?
Technically, any skin type can enjoy the benefits of a glowy foundation. For oily skin, you just have to know which hacks will keep your skin dewy while keeping excess oil at bay. "Instead of stripping the skin, the focus should be on lightweight hydration using water based moisturizers or hydrating serums to bring the skin back into balance," says Ventre.
From there, she suggests controlling oil strategically with the help of a primer around the T-zone followed by a thin layer of foundation, building coverage only where it's needed. Finally, you'll want to set the center of your face where oil tends to show up the most to allow other areas to shine through from the foundation.
Alternatively, Freedman recommends spot highlighting if you don't like the look of glowy foundations. "I spot highlight on apples of cheeks, tip of nose, brow bone, tear duct area," he says.
What to Look for
There are many glowy foundations on the market, but you also have to take your own preferences into consideration. Here are some key pointers from our experts:
Glow type: The key to a good foundation is this case is glow, not shimmer or glitter, as these types can emphasize skin texture and pores, according to Ventre. If you feel like you can't quiet find a formula that fits your needs, Freedman suggests adding a glow serum to a sheer foundation for more control over light reflection on the skin.
Longevity and tone: "The formula should wear evenly and move with the skin instead of separating or breaking apart throughout the day," explains Ventre." And of course, shade and undertone matching are essential because even the most beautiful finish won’t look right if the color isn’t seamless."
Ingredients: I good foundation shouldn't be a sacrifice for your skin's health. " I always look for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which help attract water to the skin and create that smooth, plump finish," says Ventre.
