I'm in My Simplified Skincare Era—How I Brighten, Hydrate, and Protect My Skin With Just One Product
It's the easiest way to give your complexion an extra boost.
Before I began my career in beauty, I fostered a deep fascination for all things skincare for years. Now, as I test and experiment with new products on the daily, I always take comfort in the fact that I've developed a deeper appreciation for the skin-loving ingredients that spark skin transformations. Because there's not yet a magic skincare product that works for everyone on the market, my job is to take note of the ones that help to address my specific concerns in hopes of helping someone who can relate.
I've had the goal of reversing the effects of UV damage on my skin over the past few years and have landed on a skincare lineup that works year-round and defends my complexion against environmental threats. My effort has finally started to pay off, and many of the dark spots that I've been at war with have begun to lighten and vanish. The step in my routine that made the biggest difference? Investing in moisturizers with SPF as its key ingredient.
Associate Beauty Editor Maya Thomas testing CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30.
Why is using SPF moisturizer important?
According to lecturer, skin expert, and founder of Image Dermatology, Jeanine B. Downie, M.D., the best sun protection is what you wear everyday regardless of type, brand, or formula. "I tell all of my patients to wear sunscreen, specifically those who are African American or melanin-rich—this means you too! Its 365 days a year, no exceptions," she says. Skin with more melanin doesn't mean it possess immunity from radiation exposure, advanced signs of aging, cellular damage, or types of skin cancer. Downie also flags that SPF can be helpful in skincare if its convenient for consistent use.
"In a moisturizer or in a makeup product, the SPF may be low or lower than the SPF you would apply buying a dedicated sunscreen," Downie continues. "Some moisturizers may offer only a 10 or 15 SPF, for example." When shopping for an SPF-infused moisturizer, she recommends looking for a nourishing formula with UV protection at 30 or 30+. "There are also some amazing sunscreens that are as almost as good as their non-SPF skin care product partners, so choose wisely. And you want a broad spectrum UVA and UVB product and blue light protection is a bonus," she adds.

Pros: Lightweight ferment formula that blends seamlessly with all skin tones

Best for a Natural-Looking Finish: Saie Slip Tint Tinted Moisturizer

As someone that doesn't wear foundation frequently, skin tints like this one by Saie offers the perfect way to balance out my skin tone while delivering much-needed protection against UV rays and other natural occurrences that may harm my skin barrier (which includes, but is not limited to radical damage). Saie's Slip Tint features ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in deep hydration, licorice root extract to visibly brighten the complexion, and mineral non-nano zinc oxide SPF 35 to combat the harmful effects of the sun.
Pros: Blends into a wide range of skin tones for an effortless 'no makeup' makeup look

Customer Review: "The Saie Slip Tint is one of my favorite everyday complexion products because it combines skincare benefits with lightweight coverage that looks and feels like my skin. Best for Long-Lasting Results: Kiehl's Since 1851 Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30
Size: 1.7-oz bottle | Formulation: Cream, unscented | UV Defense: SPF 30
The moisture-boosting Ultra Facial Cream has been an absolute must in my skincare routine since I was introduced to it nearly a decade ago, so imagine how excited I was to discover a version that has UVA/UVB-fighting properties. This one replenishes moisture throughout the day while providing additional environmental protection with antarcticine to combat dryness, and squalane to restore your skin's natural moisture barrier so it can stay soft and supple as you move through the day.
Pros: Smoothes and hydrates skin using glacial glycoprotein to maintain moisture balance
Cons: Its thick formula leaves some skin types with an oily appearance
Customer Review: "I really like this face cream. I’ve been using the non-SPF version consistently, but with summer here, I wanted something with sun protection that didn’t feel like traditional sunscreen. This is perfect. It’s a bit thicker than the original, but if you give it a minute to soak in, it feels totally comfortable. Great for everyday use, even just for a walk outside. I wouldn’t use this for my main sunscreen if I was spending a lot of time in the sun, like going on a hike, or a festival. But for a walk or to go to the farmers market on Sunday, it’s perfect."
Best for a Dewy Finish: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30
Size: 2.18-oz bottle | Formulation: Cream, unscented | UV Defense: SPF 30

Offered in several stunning shades that can blend flawlessly into your natural skin tone, the skin tint offers moisturizing, SPF 30 protection with a formula that features olive-derived squalane and hyaluronic acid to boost the skin's moisture levels. I just wish there were more shades available for deep skin tones since the lineup doesn't have my tanned, summer shade.
Pros: Has buildable, sheer to light coverage for a healthy-looking glow
Cons: Offers a very limited number of shades for deep skin tones
Customer Review: "I have been using this for the last few years. I really like the coverage over red areas on my cheeks and darker spots on my nose. This formula is wonderful for older skin. The coverage is light yet uniform and smooth. My five minute morning routine is so much better with this product. A quick application and then a little creamy [blush] and lipstick and I am out the door ready for the day."
Best for Preventing Hyperpigmentation: Paula's Choice 5% Vitamin C Sheer Facial Moisturizer SPF 50
Size: 2.0-oz bottle | Formulation: Liquid, unscented | UV Defense: SPF 50

Its fast-working formula is powered by white algae-derived amino acids to strengthen the skin's defenses against environmental aggressors, while immediately offering a visible glow.
Pros: Its sheer formula leaves all skin types and tones with an immediately visible glow

Customer Review: "This multi-purpose face product really delivers. It moisturizes, protects from the sun, and leaves no white cast—an excellent feature. Plus, it brightens dullness, giving your skin a fresh, radiant look. It’s a fantastic choice for an efficient skincare routine with impressive results. [I] highly recommend!"

Whether you decide to wear it alone or underneath makeup, you'll be left with a complexion that's even, glowy, and protected.
Pros: Uses squalane, which mimics the skin’s natural oils to help improve elasticity
Cons: Tends to pill slightly when layered beneath heavy, gel-based skincare and makeup
Customer Review: "I use this every day as my moisturizer and light, natural-looking coverage. It doesn't feel like an SPF, especially a mineral SPF 50. It feels invisible but I know I'm protected. [The] best part is the slight glow it leaves on my skin. It's a beautiful dewy glow that I love!"

Pros: Formula immediately visibly brightens, evens, and corrects skin tone
Cons: Causes slight irritation if applied to close to the eyes
Customer Review: "I've been using this product for a few years now. It's really worth the price in my opinion. It works wonders as a base to foundation but also great to use as your last layer in the summertime—I usually reapply after 3-5 hours. I will never use another tinted moisturizer!"
Best for Improving Elasticity: Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF 50
Over the past couple of years, I've discovered just how much my skin responds to formulas championing nourishing marine blends (marine algae and seawater, etc), and Elemis is one of my favorite brands with products built around them.
